FOR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY  (AD40D)

Incredible advancements in miniaturization,   computers, data storage, and detector technology have placed affordable, professional-quality cameras in the hands of millions.  This also provides the opportunity for budding astrophotographers to point their DSLR cameras to the night sky and take pictures of galaxies and nebula. Astrodon Inside filter technology was designed for you.

This beautiful image of the Cone Nebula was taken with a cooled, monochrome CCD camera designed for astrophotography. It cannot be used for daylight photography and costs over $10,000 (US).

The DSLR camera provides the means for hobbyists to affordably enjoy astrophotography, but there is a catch.   DSLR cameras were designed for daylight use. They were not designed to easily pick up the rich red colors common to astronomical objects. This deep red light comes from the excitation of hydrogen atoms in space at 656 nm.  We call this hydrogen-alpha, or H-a light.

Canon and other cameras have an internal filter to provide good daylight color balance, but this filter decreases the sensitivity to H-a light to about 20%.  This low red sensitivity makes astrophotography with stock DSLRs problematic.

Therefore Astrodon provides a replacement filter for Canon DSLR cameras that regains H-a sensitivity to 99% - about a factor of 5 improvement in sensitivity.  The original Canon filter (below left) has a blue-green color, whereas the Astrodon Inside replacement (below right) is totally clear, yet it also blocks all UV and near-Infrared light.

You can see the difference in the following graph, where the transmission of light through each filter as a function of wavelength is compared.

You can see that the Canon filter passes only 20% of the H-a light to the sensor whereas the Astrodon Inside passes~99%. You can also see that the Astrodon Inside filter blocks all UV and Near-IR light.  In the Near-IR, we only transmit 0.003%, whereas a competitor's filter lets 6% Near-IR light pass to the sensor. That's 2000 times less for the Astrodon Inside filter.  We used the Canon filter spectrum from this reference.

The Canon filter must be removed and replaced by the Astrodon Inside filter. For daylight use, you will use a custom white point, often shot with an 18% gray card.  Thus, the modification allows you to enjoy daylight photography while using your Canon camera at night for astrophotography.

Astrodon has teamed with two expert groups to provide this service; one in North America (Imaging Infinity) and one in Europe (EOS for Astro).  Please contact these experts for the Astrodon Inside modification. Their contact information is shown in the right column of this page.  Astrodon currently does not sell these filters directly.

Please note that filters purchased directly from these expert groups (one per end user) will be provided unmounted and NOT in the frame shown above.  In this case you are responsible for all modifications, including removing of the original Canon filter and ensuring that the correct spacing is used to reach perect focus.

Please contact these groups by email for any pre-sale technical questions.

FOR NIR PHOTOGRAPHY (AD40D-Clear)

Astrodon introduces the AD40D-Clear filter for Canon full-spectrum modifications.

This filter has a durable hard A/R coating, and hence, tramsmits NIR ligt to the sensitivity limit of the camera's sensor near 1100 nm.  The specturm of our AD40D-Clear filter is shown above.

It's thickness was designed such that the internal Canon filters can be replaced with the AD40D-Clear while still maintaining auto-focusing regardless of what clip or lens filter is used.

It allows you to place a NIR filter on the lens or inserted as a clip filter between the lens and the mirror. (e.g. Astronomik).  The modified Canon camera can now be used for NIR photography.   Please note that with clip filters, you can only use Canon EF lenses and not the EF-S lenses.

This image was taken with a Canon 40D and Canon 14 mm EF f/2.8 lens and the AD40D-Clear modification at f/8 and 1/80 hand-held.  It is a pseudo-color rendition by swapping the blue and red color channels.  Black and white images are also gorgeous since the foliage is bright in NIR photos, as shown below.

With this modification, you will not be able to see anything in your viewfinder.  You will need to use LiveView to compose your image and focus it. You will also need a custom white point, using a gray card or even shooting an image of grass.

There are other lens or clip filters that can be used with the AD40D-Clear, such as a UV/IR cut filter for astrophotography.  That would make the AD40D-Clear modification functionally equivalent to the AD40D described above, and hence, useful for astrophotography.  The advantage is that you can use a variety of filters for different types of photography.

Lastly, the AD40D-Clear modification combined with the OWB clip filter allows daylight photography to be used without a custom white point balance, AND without the overall reddish hues that are common with the astrophotography modification and a custom white point.

The image below was taken by Hap Griffin with a Canon 40D modifed with the AD40D-Clear filter and the OWB clip filter (1/400, f/13, ISO 400, 28 mm lens).  A standard white balance was use and the image was auto-focused by the camera.  Notice that it lacks the overall reddish hue mentioned above. No color adjustments were made.

To summarize AD40D-Clear:
  • Transmission >95% from 430 to 1100 nm
  • Hard-oxide, durable coatings with anti-reflection built-in
  • Straie-free fused silica substrate
  • Plug-n-play modification with no focus adjustment needed
  • Ideal for NIR photography with clip-in or front-lens NIR filter
  • Equivalent to modified DSLR for astrophotography with UV/NIR cut filter
  • Can be used for daylight photography with OWB Clip filter without custom white balance
  • AD40D-Clear works for all APS Canon cameras from 400D and 40D and later

Modification services using Astrodon Inside filters for Canon cameras can be obtained from the following expert groups.  These groups can also sell Astrodon Inside filters to individual end-user customers at the minimim advertised price listed below. The end-user customer cannot be a reseller.  1 filter per customer.  In this way, end-user customers who wish to perform the modification themselves can do so with expert guidance from these groups.  Please note that filters purchased individually without modifying the camera will be provided unmounted and not in the rubber frame shown in the pictures on this page.  It should be realized that any damage done to the camera is the responsibility of the end-user customer and not the expert group or Astrodon. It should also be realized that modifying a Canon camera will void its warranty with Canon.  Astrodon will not sell Astrodon Inside filters directly to end-user customers or to the stores in order to ensure that this expert guidance is available, if needed.
