Kiya Winston: Upbringing & Education

Born on January 13, 1974, in Morristown, New Jersey, Kiya was raised by a single mother, Susan Winston, alongside her sister Mia who later became an artist and photographer.

Kiya Winston’s journey into fashion began out of necessity.

As a petite young girl, she and her mother struggled to find clothes that fit properly. This need sparked young Kiya’s creative solution – making her own clothes. Her mother supported the decision by gifting her her first sewing machine as a Christmas gift when Kiya was only 11!

The second pivotal moment in young Kiya’s life came during a 1982 gymnastics camp in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. There she experienced a chance encounter with Diana Ross that would shape her future in design.

Watching the legendary singer sit gracefully on the grass in white silk chiffon left a lasting impression on Kiya. It inspired her to create clothing that combined elegance with practicality.

Kiya also excelled academically. Fun fact: She first pursued pre-medicine at Willian & Mary University, graduating in 1996. She went on to earn a second degree in art and architectural planning from the University of Cincinnati in 2000.

Kiya Winston: Her Career as a Fashion Designer

What started with sewing clothes for her college gymnastics club blossomed into a full-fledged fashion empire.

In 2001, Kiya launched her namesake brand, but her big breakthrough came in 2014 with the debut of ‘Uptown Sweat’. The latter is a sophisticated take on the traditional tracksuit designed for women over thirty.

Kiya’s commitment to American manufacturing set her apart in the industry, with every piece produced domestically.

Then, in 2018, Kiya opened her dream space – the Kiya Tomlin Work/Shop in Etna, Pennsylvania. It’s a boutique that manifested her vision to design, manufacture, and sell under one roof.

Interestingly, HBO offered to feature Kiya in the reality TV series ‘Hard Knocks’. She initially hesitated, not wanting to be defined solely as an NFL coach’s wife. HBO explained that the series was to celebrate women’s independent achievements, after which she agreed to share her story.

Today, Kiya has a thriving social media presence and a business valued at approximately $2 million!

Kiya Winston: Personal Life

Kiya’s love story began at William & Mary, where she met future NFL coach Mike Tomlin. They tied the knot on May 25, 1996, and have three children together.

Their sons Michael Dean (born 2000) and Mason (born 2002) are pursuing football careers, while their daughter Harlyn Quinn (born 2006) graduated from Shadyside Academy in 2024.

Final Words

Kiya Winston is the woman behind NFL coaches. She went from an ambitious designer to a successful fashion entrepreneur, building her own sustainable brand. She has three children with Mike and lives a happy life.

These days, I enjoy capturing moments in writing, regardless of their nature, because I believe that every experience we go through has its purpose.
